The Basic Kayaking course is a co-ed, hands-on course. Students need no prior boating experience. Good attendance is strongly recommended in order to achieve the best results. Satisfactory completion enables students to rent kayaks from the UCSC Recreation Outdoor Equipment office.
Students master the basics of kayaking while paddling inside the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, then venture out on the beautiful Monterey Bay for further practice during this four-week course (weather permitting). Sea Kayaks provide access to otherwise unexplorable areas.
Enroll online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on Campus (not at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the community during Fall and Spring, however, non-students who hold a current OPERS wellness card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus.
You will also build paddling strength and endurance while practicing these skills on the water. At the same time you will learn to respect and appreciate the natural wonders of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary.
