Intermediate Dinghy Sailing Class
The Intermediate Dinghy sailing course is a co-ed, hands-on course taught
in six Coronado 15' boats with a limit of 12 students. Good attendance is strongly advised in order to achieve the best results. The
course begins with a review of the rigging, sailing techniques, and boating safety
skills that were covered in the UCSC Basic Dinghy sailing class. Satisfactory completion meets prerequisite for Intermediate Keel sailing classes and enables students to achieve
the small boat "level two" skill classification for the UCSC Boating Club. This course is also offered to the public every summer through
the UCSC Boating Center Summer Boating Program.

Enroll online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on Campus (not
at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in
order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the public during Fall, Winter and Spring, however non-students who hold a current OPERS wellness card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus. Winter quarter is the best bet for non-students during the academic year as enrollments are usually lower.
Prerequisite: Basic Dinghy. Swimming ability is required.
Instructors: Rusty Kingon, Gabe Kilburn.
Fall/Winter/Spring Class Fee: $55.00

What will be covered:
After the review phase, the emphasis of the Intermediate Dinghy class shifts towards further development and refinement of small boat sailing techniques including:
-Right of Way: "windward/leeward", sail powered vessels v. motor/human powerered vessels, sailing in and out of the harbor.
-Sailing in more wind: More time is spent outside of the harbor learning to handle stronger conditions.
-Physical techniques: In stronger wind, more powerful physical techniques are necessary in order to achieve the best performance from the boats. These include: more advanced levels of body position ("hiking out"), more efficient control of sail adjustment ("trimming"), and a greater command of the steering of the boat.
-Theory: Sail trim, angle of heel, points of sail, depowering vs. powering up, micrometeorology, and the relevant fundamentals of aero and aqua-dynamics and how they relate to sailboat performance and handling.
