Leadership Development Program (LDP) 2018

Formerly known as Counselor in Training (CIT)

Sammy Slug Summer Camp offers a Leadership Development Program to aid High School students in building their career, leadership, and mentoring skills.

Leadership Development Program campers spend their time and skills in a hands-on, experiential learning environment structured to aid in the development of targeted leadership and career skills (communication, responsibility, time management, mentoring, initiative, team work, decision making, organization, work ethic etc.).

The Leadership Development Program is primarily targeted towards students in grades 9-12, however exceptions may be made for those showing exemplary maturity levels. LDP campers will work closely with both counselors and campers each week for continuity of experience. LDP campers are encouraged to make a commitment of no less than 3 of the 8 weeks of summer camp to experience the maximum benefit of exposure to college student leaders and professional staff mentoring. The weeks that a LDP camper is involved do not need to be continuous.

LDP campers also benefit from a focused hour of leadership development each day with UC Santa Cruz OPERS (Office of Physical Education Recreation and Sport) students and professional staff members.

The following is an example of a "typical day" for a LDP camper:

  • 9:00am - 9:30am: Goal setting with LDP Team
  • 9:30 - 10:00am: Assist with Camper Check-In, Morning Welcome, and Group Stretch

  • 10:00am - 12:30pm: Assist with group activities (sport, arts & crafts, etc..)

  • 12:30 - 1:00pm: Lunch

  • 1:00 - 4:00pm: Assist with/lead group swim/pool activities

  • 4:00 - 4:30pm: Debrief with LDP Team

2018 weekly camp sessions run from June 25-Aug 17. To apply for a spot in the LDP fill out the application linked here. The initial deadline to send in applications is May 11th, 2018. After that time, applicants will be contacted on a rolling basis for the next step in the selection process. Selected applicants will be required to pay a $100.00 program fee for every week that they register. For any questions or concerns contact Camp Director Clint Angus.
